Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Microsoft Dataverse MCP server: CRUD, FetchXML, metadata, schema, audit, batch and security roles.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Other

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • You fill in yourself: MCP_CONFIG_PATH, DATAVERSE_ENV_URL

You need

  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "dataverse": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-dataverse"
      ],
      "env": {
        "MCP_CONFIG_PATH": "your-value",
        "DATAVERSE_ENV_URL": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add dataverse --env MCP_CONFIG_PATH=your-value --env DATAVERSE_ENV_URL=your-value -- npx -y mcp-dataverse

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "dataverse": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-dataverse"
      ],
      "env": {
        "MCP_CONFIG_PATH": "your-value",
        "DATAVERSE_ENV_URL": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "dataverse": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-dataverse"
      ],
      "env": {
        "MCP_CONFIG_PATH": "your-value",
        "DATAVERSE_ENV_URL": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This one runs on your computer, and ChatGPT can only connect to servers on the internet. Pick another app.

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

Values you fill in

  • MCP_CONFIG_PATH env
    Path to a config.json file (overrides all other env vars). Recommended for VS Code / Claude Desktop setups.
  • DATAVERSE_ENV_URL env
    Your Dataverse environment URL

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

Common questions

Is MCP Dataverse safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.7.10) reached the registry 24 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Node.js on your computer.

What can I use instead?

MCP Dataverse

An MCP server for Microsoft Dataverse.

100 tools · 4 resources · 5 guided workflows · Three auth modes

[→ Full Documentation](https://codeurali.github.io/mcp-dataverse)

Why MCP Dataverse?

AI agents hallucinate schema, guess column names, and build broken OData queries. This server gives them real-time access to your Dataverse environment — schema, records, metadata, solutions — through the Model Context Protocol.

  • Three auth modes — device code (local), client credentials (CI/CD), managed identity (Azure-hosted)
  • Works with any MCP client — VS Code, Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, Gemini, Codex CLI
  • Atomic tools — each tool does one thing well; the AI picks the right one
  • Structured outputs — every response returns {summary, data, suggestions} as both text and MCP structuredContent (with a declared outputSchema on all core tools)
  • Guardrails — every tool declares read-only or destructive hints, and the riskiest operations require an explicit confirm: true
  • Encrypted token cache — AES-256-GCM cached credentials, kept out of tool output

Install

npx mcp-dataverse install

The interactive wizard configures your environment, registers the server in VS Code, and authenticates your Microsoft account in under 2 minutes.

Requires Node.js 20+. For other clients (Claude, Cursor, Windsurf…) see Multi-Client Setup.

Update

npx mcp-dataverse update

No re-config required — just checks your existing setup and shows what changed. npx auto-fetches the latest version on each run, so simply restarting your MCP client is enough to get the new tools.

Authentication

Three modes — choose based on where the server runs:

ModeWhen to use
Device Code (default)Local development — interactive Microsoft login, token cached on disk
Client CredentialsUnattended: CI/CD, Docker, Azure services — authMethod: "client-credentials" + App Registration
Managed IdentityAzure-hosted (App Service, Container Apps) — zero secrets, authMethod: "managed-identity"

Device code quick start: authentication triggers on the first tool call.

  1. Open View → Output → MCP — a sign-in code appears
  2. Go to https://microsoft.com/devicelogin, enter the code, sign in with your work account
  3. Token is cached encrypted — all future starts are silent

For client credentials and managed identity setup, see Authentication docs.

Connect using VS Code / Copilot with:

{

"servers": { "dataverse": { "type": "http", "url": "http://localhost:3000/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer mysecret" } } } }

Troubleshooting

SymptomFix
No sign-in promptOpen View → Output → MCP — the device code is displayed there
No MSAL accounts foundRun npx mcp-dataverse-auth then restart the server
Authentication timed outRestart the MCP server — a fresh code is generated automatically
Server not appearing in Agent modeRun npx mcp-dataverse install or npx mcp-dataverse doctor
HTTP errorsRun npx mcp-dataverse doctor to diagnose config and connectivity

Performance Tip

MCP Dataverse is designed to be comprehensive, but most AI models work best with fewer tools in context. Deselect the tools you don't need in your client's tool picker (e.g. VS Code Chat panel) to keep the agent focused and responsive.
