Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Search a plain-English guide to open-source AI projects: what each does, cost and privacy.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs in the cloud
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Search & AI memory

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

You need

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Works in Claude on the web, desktop and mobile:

  1. Open Settings → Connectors
  2. Press Add custom connector
  3. Paste the address below and press Add
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker
SettingsConnectors1+ Add2https://…3

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http plain-ayi https://plain-ayi.com/mcp

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "plain-ayi": {
      "url": "https://plain-ayi.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "plain-ayi": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://plain-ayi.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

ChatGPT connects only to servers on the internet:

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web → Settings → Connectors (Apps)
  2. Press Create or Add (some plans need Developer mode under Advanced first)
  3. Paste the address below, give it a name and save
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker

    Find open-source AI projects by what they do, e.g. 'run chat models offline' or 'transcribe audio'. Searches both shelves unless 'shelf' is given: 'ai' (AI tools) or 'ai-integrated' (everyday software that AI assistants can use, e.g. a notes app with an MCP server). Optionally na

  • get_project

    Full details of one project: what it does, who it's for, whether it needs coding, rating, numbers, license and source links.

  • list_categories

    All categories on both shelves ('ai' and 'ai-integrated') with a short description, how many projects each has, and the slugs of its projects.

Common questions

Is Plain-AyI safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.0.2) reached the registry yesterday.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

In the same category: Context7, Codebase Memory, Exa

Plain-AyI

Open-source AI projects, explained in plain words.

A free, read-only guide for non-technical people and developers, with a connector for AI assistants.

plain-ayi.com · New this week · Connector setup · Privacy

What it is

Some of the most useful AI tools are open source, but they're scattered across GitHub and described in developer language. Plain-AyI gathers a growing, non-exhaustive list of them and explains each one in everyday words:

  • what it does and who it's for
  • whether you need to code
  • what it costs, including when a paid AI account is needed
  • whether your data stays on your device
  • simple first steps, with safety notes before you install anything

New projects are added every day. Ratings reflect public activity (stars, contributors, downloads, recent updates), not a verdict on which project matters most.

Use it from your AI assistant

Plain-AyI has a read-only MCP connector, so your AI assistant can search the guide for you, for example *"find me a free tool that turns my voice recordings into text, without them leaving my laptop"*.

Connector address: https://plain-ayi.com/mcp. No account or API key is needed.

Claude (web, desktop and mobile)

Find Plain-AyI in Claude's connector directory and click Connect. Or add it yourself: Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector, name it Plain-AyI, and paste https://plain-ayi.com/mcp.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http plain-ayi https://plain-ayi.com/mcp

Cursor

Add to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or to .cursor/mcp.json in a project:

{

"mcpServers": { "plain-ayi": { "url": "https://plain-ayi.com/mcp" } } }

</details>

GitHub Copilot in VS Code

Add to .vscode/mcp.json in your project:

{

"servers": { "plain-ayi": { "type": "http", "url": "https://plain-ayi.com/mcp" } } }

</details>

Gemini CLI

Install it as an extension:

gemini extensions install https://github.com/AyodejiOO/plain-ayi-connector

Or add to ~/.gemini/settings.json:

{

"mcpServers": { "plain-ayi": { "httpUrl": "https://plain-ayi.com/mcp" } } }

</details>

The Plain-AyI skill

The connector gives your assistant the data. The Plain-AyI skill teaches it how to help with it well. It asks a question or two when a request is vague, suggests a few options rather than one "winner", checks the details, and explains each option's cost, coding needs and privacy in plain words, with a short safety note before anything is installed.

Claude Code (skill and connector together)

Install the plugin, which adds both:

/plugin marketplace add AyodejiOO/plain-ayi-connector

/plugin install plain-ayi@plain-ayi

</details>

Claude (web and desktop)

  1. Add the connector first (see above).
  2. Download plain-ayi-skill.zip from the latest release.
  3. In Claude, open Customize → Skills, choose to upload a skill, and select the zip.

The skill's instructions are in skills/plain-ayi/SKILL.md, so you can read exactly what it tells your assistant.

Tools
ToolWhat it does
search_projectsFinds projects by what they do, with optional category and "no coding needed" filters
get_projectFull details of one project: cost, privacy, licence, first steps and official links

All three tools are read-only. The connector can't change anything, and it keeps no record of who asked. See the privacy page.
