Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Token-efficient database MCP server for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, SQLite

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Databases & datasets
  • You need to fill in: DSN, DB_PASSWORD, SSH_PASSWORD, SSH_PASSPHRASE

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • You fill in yourself: DSN, DB_TYPE, DB_HOST, DB_PORT, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, DB_NAME, TRANSPORT, PORT, ID, SSH_HOST, SSH_PORT, SSH_USER, SSH_PASSWORD, SSH_KEY, SSH_PASSPHRASE, SSH_AUTH_SOCK

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

Common questions

Is DBHub safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: DSN, DB_PASSWORD, SSH_PASSWORD, SSH_PASSPHRASE

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.5.1) reached the registry 3 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Node.js on your computer.

What can I use instead?

DBHub is a minimal MCP server: token-efficient, zero-dependency, and just two tools by default with opt-in extras. This lightweight gateway allows MCP-compatible clients to connect to and explore different databases:

  • Minimal: Zero dependency, token efficient with a minimal set of MCP tools to maximize context window
  • Multi-Database: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, and SQLite through a single interface
  • Multi-Connection: Connect to multiple databases simultaneously with TOML configuration
  • Guardrails: Read-only mode, row limiting, and query timeout to prevent runaway operations
  • Secure Access: SSH tunneling and SSL/TLS encryption

DBHub is the official example in the Claude Code docs for connecting to PostgreSQL via MCP.

Token Efficiency

DBHub loads just 2 tools by default at 1.4k tokens — 13-14x fewer than alternatives — keeping the context window open for your actual work.

MCP ServerDefault ConfigDefault Tools
DBHub1.4k2 (execute_sql, search_objects)
MCP Toolbox19.0k28
Supabase MCP19.3kall

Use Cases

  • Local Development: Schema exploration, query validation, and data debugging with Claude Code, VS Code, Cursor, etc.
  • Non-Technical Access: Expose curated, read-only views to non-technical staff via Claude Desktop, VS Code, Cursor, etc.
  • Multi-Database Consolidation: Replace separate MCP servers for each database with a single DBHub process
  • Production Troubleshooting: Read-only diagnostics with guardrails against runaway queries

Supported Databases

PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MariaDB, Oracle, and SQLite.

MCP Tools

DBHub implements MCP tools for database operations:

  • [execute_sql](https://dbhub.ai/tools/execute-sql): Execute SQL queries with transaction support and safety controls
  • [search_objects](https://dbhub.ai/tools/search-objects): Search and explore database schemas, tables, columns, indexes, and procedures with progressive disclosure
  • [explain_sql](https://dbhub.ai/tools/explain-sql) (opt-in): Show a query's execution plan without running it
  • [health_check](https://dbhub.ai/tools/health-check) (opt-in): Report connection pool state and buffer cache hit ratio
  • [Custom Tools](https://dbhub.ai/tools/custom-tools): Define reusable, parameterized SQL operations in your dbhub.toml configuration file

Workbench

DBHub includes a built-in web interface for interacting with your database tools. It provides a visual way to execute queries, run custom tools, and view request traces without requiring an MCP client.

Installation

npx @bytebase/dbhub@latest --transport http --port 8080 --dsn "postgres://user:password@localhost:5432/dbname?sslmode=disable"
