Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

A night city of developers: README cards, repo contributor streets, a year in lights, project rooms.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

You need

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Works in Claude on the web, desktop and mobile:

  1. Open Settings → Connectors
  2. Press Add custom connector
  3. Paste the address below and press Add
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker
SettingsConnectors1+ Add2https://…3
https://byteland.dev/mcp

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http byteland https://byteland.dev/mcp

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "byteland": {
      "url": "https://byteland.dev/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "byteland": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://byteland.dev/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

ChatGPT connects only to servers on the internet:

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web → Settings → Connectors (Apps)
  2. Press Create or Add (some plans need Developer mode under Advanced first)
  3. Paste the address below, give it a name and save
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker
SettingsConnectors1+ Create2https://…3
https://byteland.dev/mcp

Menu names can differ slightly by plan and over time.

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

What it can do

Tool names and descriptions exactly as the server reported them on Nov 6, 2026. The maker wrote them, not us; we show them as plain text.

  • about

    Short description of Byteland: what buildings, rooms and lights stand for, units, privacy rules and supported languages. A good first call.

  • get_street

    Buildings in a range (owner, type, floors, light counts) and gaps (alleys, empty lots). Positions in centimetres, at most 80000 cm.

  • get_building

    Public detail of one building: the owner’s profile, rooms and their states, machine-readable parts and the building recipe.

  • get_profile

    A developer’s or company’s profile: bio, links (GitHub, website, socials), badges, projects and open-source contributions. If not on the street, looks for a saved profile, then GitHub; otherwise generates a sample (preview:true).

  • list_projects

    A profile’s projects: state, description, stack, links (repo, site) plus open-source contributions. Private projects appear only as hidden:true.

  • get_project

    A single project of a profile. Returns nothing for private projects.

  • search

    Find people, projects and stacks across every resident of the city (people, projects, stacks), plus buildings on the street by username, name, project or technology (results). Private projects never appear.

  • popular

    The leaderboard: buildings by unique visits this week (or period: "all"), the most viewed projects and the newest residents. A visit counts once per person per day; owners do not count themselves.

  • get_stats

    Unique visits (all time and this week), project views, weekly rank and the last 14 days for one username.

  • list_rooms

    The project rooms of a person that have been used (every public project of a resident has a room, open by default; one nobody wrote in is empty and not listed): mode (open or read-only), channels with message counts, forum threads, last activity and how many are in voice. Closed

  • read_room

    The latest messages of one channel of a project room (default: its first channel) and the forum threads (idea, review, question, announcement) with reply and reaction counts.

  • read_thread

    One forum thread of a project room with all of its replies and reactions.

  • live

    Voice rooms with people in them right now and the rooms with messages in the last 48 hours. Voice presence comes from the running site (BYTELAND_URL, default http://127.0.0.1:8787); without it only the recent rooms are known.

  • preview_building

    Builds a user's building as if it stood at the start of a street (GitHub repositories become rooms). The preview is not added to the city. Append the returned url_hash to index.html to open it on the site.

  • year_in_lights

    Anyone's GitHub contribution calendar for one year, by month: contributions per day (with GitHub's quartile level), the total, days with contributions, the longest and the current streak and the busiest month. image is the Byteland picture of it (twelve month buildings, one windo

  • repo_street

    Any public GitHub repository as a Byteland street: its top contributors (bots left out) with commit counts, who pushed in the last 30 days (their lights are on), who lives in Byteland, the total number of contributors, and the image and page links (street: an SVG for READMEs, pag

Common questions

Is Byteland safe?

It passed 2 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.6.0) reached the registry yesterday.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?
