Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Swiss customs tariff (TARES), FINMA register, NOGA/NACE/ISIC codes. 4 free tools + search trial.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Computer or cloud
  • Transport: stdio, Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Search & AI memory
  • You need to fill in: OPENSWISSDATA_API_KEY

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 3 of 3 passed
  • Runs on the maker’s server: what you ask it goes through their server.
  • Can do 7 things (tools) tariff_lookup, kyc_check, company_check, cross_walk …
  • You fill in yourself: OPENSWISSDATA_API_KEY, OPENSWISSDATA_BASE_URL, OPENSWISSDATA_TIMEOUT_MS

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • Runs in the cloudNothing to install; it connects over the internet
  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

ChatGPT connects only to servers on the internet:

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web → Settings → Connectors (Apps)

Values you fill in

  • OPENSWISSDATA_API_KEY secret env
Optional existing OAuth token for Pro tools (closed to new subscribers). Without it: 4 free tools (100 calls/hour/IP) plus a trial of the 3 search tools (20 calls/day/IP in total).
  • OPENSWISSDATA_BASE_URL env
Override the remote MCP endpoint (default: https://mcp.openswissdata.com). Useful for staging or self-hosting.
  • OPENSWISSDATA_TIMEOUT_MS env
    Per-request timeout in milliseconds.

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

What it can do

Tool names and descriptions exactly as the server reported them on Nov 6, 2026. The maker wrote them, not us; we show them as plain text.

  • tariff_lookup

Look up the Swiss customs tariff (TARES). An 8-digit Swiss tariff number (dots allowed) returns the full line: designations in FR/DE/IT/EN, MFN duty, preferential regimes, restrictions and customs relief codes. A 2- to 7-digit HS prefix (for example the international HS6 code) li

  • kyc_check

Search the FINMA register of supervised institutions and the FINMA warnings list by name (case- and accent-insensitive). Returns the closest top_k authorised entities and warning entries (exact name, then whole word, then substring; all words in any order as a fallback) with the

  • company_check

Look up a Swiss company by its UID (CHE-xxx.xxx.xxx): commercial register data (LINDAS), FINMA register entries and LEI records (GLEIF), each fact with its source and, when known, the date it was read, plus exact cross-checks between sources and checks of the registered address a

  • cross_walk

Find correspondences between NOGA 2008, NOGA 2025, NACE 2.0, NACE 2.1 and ISIC 4 activity codes (Swiss, EU and UN classifications). Returns the exact or approximate relation, its sources and the documented path. Never chains two non-exact relations; a non-exact correspondence nee

Common questions

Is OpenSwissData safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: OPENSWISSDATA_API_KEY

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

Either way works: install it on your computer or connect to the cloud version.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.3.2) reached the registry yesterday.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

@openswissdata/mcp

MCP server for Swiss federal reference data: the Swiss customs tariff (TARES), the FINMA register of supervised institutions and the FINMA warnings list, and NOGA / NACE / ISIC activity-code correspondences. Four tools work without any key or sign-up.

This package is a small STDIO bridge to the remote OpenSwissData MCP endpoint, for clients that only launch local processes. Clients that speak MCP over HTTP can connect directly to https://mcp.openswissdata.com/jsonrpc without it.

Free tools (no key)

Limit: 100 calls per hour per IP address.

ToolWhat it answers
tariff_lookupAn 8-digit Swiss tariff number (dots allowed, e.g. 8471.3000) returns the full TARES line: designations in FR/DE/IT/EN, MFN duty, preferential regimes, restrictions, customs relief codes. A 2- to 7-digit HS prefix (e.g. the international HS6 code 847130) lists the Swiss 8-digit lines under it.
kyc_checkSearches the FINMA register and the FINMA warnings list by entity name.
company_checkA Swiss company by UID (CHE-xxx.xxx.xxx): commercial register, FINMA and LEI records, each fact with its source.
cross_walkMaps an activity code between NOGA 2008, NOGA 2025, NACE 2.0, NACE 2.1 and ISIC 4, with the relation type and its source.

tariff_semantic_search, classify_text and finma_search are free to try without a key: 20 calls per day in total per IP address. tariff_changelog and entity_history need existing access rights; new paid subscriptions are closed at the moment. Buying a dataset file does not create an API key. statent_lookup has been withdrawn.

Setup

Claude Code, remote endpoint (no bridge needed):

claude mcp add --transport http openswissdata https://mcp.openswissdata.com/jsonrpc

Clients configured with mcpServers and a local process (Claude Desktop, Cline and others):

{

"mcpServers": { "openswissdata": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@openswissdata/mcp"] } } }

Tools and their schemas come from the server at each listing.

VariableDefaultUse
OPENSWISSDATA_API_KEYnoneExisting OAuth token, for the rights it carries
OPENSWISSDATA_BASE_URLhttps://mcp.openswissdata.comAlternative server
OPENSWISSDATA_TIMEOUT_MS30000Timeout, including reading the whole response

Keep a key in the client's private configuration. Diagnostics go to stderr; stdout is reserved for the protocol. openswissdata-mcp --version and --help print the version and help.

Development

Node 22 is used for the checks. The runtime keeps its Node 18+ declaration; use a maintained version.

npm ci

npm run typecheck npm test npm run build npm pack --dry-run

The tests run a full MCP exchange with the official SDK and interrupt a response whose body stalls. A change in the repository does not publish a new npm version: check the registry separately before distribution.

The Dockerfile offers a local alternative: docker build -t openswissdata-mcp ., then docker run --rm -i openswissdata-mcp.

Limits

OpenSwissData is an unofficial copy. Keep the notices shown to the user. An approximate correspondence needs expert validation; a missing tariff value does not mean duty-free; no FINMA result is not a compliance certificate. Check the original sources (xtares.admin.ch, finma.ch, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office) before any decision.

Full datasets are sold as signed files at openswissdata.com. A summary for AI agents lives at openswissdata.com/llms.txt.
