Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Read-only access to your dotstell notes, bookmarks, tasks, people and meetings.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs in the cloud
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Docs, sheets & office work
  • You need to fill in: Authorization

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on the maker’s server: what you ask it goes through their server.
  • You fill in yourself: Authorization

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

This address needs a key in a request header, which the add-connector menu cannot set. Use Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code instead.

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http dotstell https://dotstell.app/api/mcp --header 'Authorization: Bearer {dotstell_token}'

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "dotstell": {
      "url": "https://dotstell.app/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer {dotstell_token}"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "dotstell": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://dotstell.app/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer {dotstell_token}"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This address needs a key in a request header, which the add-connector menu cannot set. Use Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code instead.

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

Values you fill in

  • Authorization secret required HTTP header
    Your dotstell token as a Bearer token. Create one in dotstell under Connect AI tools (MCP server).

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

Common questions

Is dotstell safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: Authorization

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.9.1) reached the registry 18 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

What is Dotstell?

Dotstell is an open source personal knowledge graph — a single place to write notes, track people, manage tasks, save bookmarks, and connect all of them together through a visual graph. With a built-in AI layer that understands your entire knowledge base.

Most productivity tools are built around capture. Dotstell is built around connection — and now, conversation.

Capture your ideas, meeting notes, and research. Connect them to people, tasks, and bookmarks — building a knowledge graph that grows with you. Ask an AI that answers from your own notes, not the internet — chat, get person intelligence, generate writing, and discover what you already know.

*Everything you write, everyone you know, everything you do — all linked in one living knowledge graph. Now with AI that understands all of it.*

The question it answers that other tools don't:

*"What do I know about this person, this project, this decision — right now, in full context?"*

Support the project

Dotstell is free, self-hostable, and built in the open. If it saves you time or you believe in what we're building:

  • [Star the repo](https://github.com/dotstell/dotstell/stargazers) — the single most useful thing you can do. It helps others find Dotstell and tells us the work is worthwhile.
  • [Open an issue](https://github.com/dotstell/dotstell/issues) — bug reports and feature requests shape what gets built next.
  • [Contribute code](CONTRIBUTING.md) — all skill levels welcome; see the contributing guide.
  • Share it — tell someone who needs a better way to organise their work.

Every star, issue, and PR genuinely matters for an early-stage OSS project.

Getting Started

Prerequisites
  • Node.js 20.9+
  • pnpm — npm install -g pnpm

We use pnpm instead of npm/yarn because it is significantly faster (hard-linked global store, no re-downloading the same package twice), produces a deterministic pnpm-lock.yaml, and is required by the Tauri CLI toolchain used for the desktop build. The lockfile is committed — always use pnpm install, not npm install, to keep the lockfile consistent.

1. Clone
git clone https://github.com/dotstell/dotstell.git

cd dotstell

2. Install dependencies
pnpm install
3. Set up Supabase
  1. Create a new project at supabase.com
  2. Go to SQL Editor and run supabase/schema.sql to create all tables, policies, and triggers.

That one file is all a new project needs. For an existing database, apply any migrations you have not run yet, in order:

supabase/migrations/

├── add_notebooks_table.sql ├── add_notes_soft_delete.sql ├── 002_bookmarks_enhancements.sql ├── 003_bookmark_visits.sql ├── 004_notes_parent.sql ├── 005_notes_sort_pin.sql ├── 006_notes_color.sql ├── 007_notebooks_constraints.sql ├── 008_ai_embeddings.sql ← vector(768) columns on notes + bookmarks (AI semantic search) ├── 009_ai_match_functions.sql ← pgvector cosine similarity RPC functions ├── 010_tasks_embedding.sql ← vector(768) column on tasks + match_tasks() (tasks in AI Chat RAG) ├── 011_fix_function_search_paths.sql ├── 012_mcp.sql ← MCP tokens and the read-only functions behind the MCP server └── 013_data_api_grants.sql ← explicit table grants (needed on new Supabase projects from 30 Oct 2026; safe to run on any)

  1. Copy your project URL and anon key from Settings → API
4. Configure environment
cp .env.local.example .env.local

Edit .env.local:

NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_URL=https://your-project.supabase.co

NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY=your-anon-key

Behind a corporate SSL proxy? Add NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED=0 to your .env.local. Do not set this in production.

5. Run
pnpm dev

Open http://localhost:3000, create an account and start connecting your knowledge.
