Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Live web search and clean-markdown page fetch over the Keenable web index.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Computer or cloud
  • Transport: stdio, Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Search & AI memory
  • You need to fill in: KEENABLE_API_KEY, X-API-Key

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • Runs in the cloudNothing to install; it connects over the internet
  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

This address needs a key in a request header, which the add-connector menu cannot set. Use Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code instead.

Or run it on your computer

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

    "web-search": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",

      ],
      "env": {
        "KEENABLE_API_KEY": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http web-search 'https://api.keenable.ai/mcp-public?keenable_title=mcp-registry' --header 'X-API-Key: your-value'

Or run it on your computer

claude mcp add web-search --env KEENABLE_API_KEY=your-value -- npx -y @keenable/mcp

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

Values you fill in

  • KEENABLE_API_KEY secret env
    Optional Keenable API key. Keyless by default (rate-limited); a key lifts the hourly cap.
  • X-API-Key secret HTTP header
    Optional Keenable API key. Keyless by default (rate-limited); a key lifts the hourly cap.

Common questions

Is Keenable Web Search safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: KEENABLE_API_KEY, X-API-Key

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

Either way works: install it on your computer or connect to the cloud version.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.2.1) reached the registry today.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

Keenable MCP

MCP server for live web search and clean-markdown page fetch over the Keenable web index.

  • Hosted endpoint: https://api.keenable.ai/mcp (Streamable HTTP)
  • Tools: search_web_pages, fetch_page_content
  • Keyless by default (1,000 requests/hour). An optional API key lifts the cap.

The server is hosted, so most clients just point at the URL. For clients (or config paths) that only accept a stdio command there is a thin npm wrapper (@keenable/mcp) that bridges to the same endpoint.

Tools

ToolDescription
search_web_pagesLive web search. Args: query (required), plus optional mode (pro or realtime), site, published_after / published_before, acquired_after / acquired_before, query_time (point-in-time upper bound, not a recency filter), max_results (1-50), snippet_max_length (180-10000), session_id, output_format, disable_cards (plain web pages instead of Keenable-written cards).
fetch_page_contentFetch a URL and return clean markdown. Args: url (required), optional max_chars (default 50000), live, prompt (extract only what you ask for), session_id, output_format.

Use it

Remote (recommended)

Clients with remote MCP support — Cursor, Cline, VS Code, and Claude Desktop's Custom Connectors UI — connect to the URL directly:

{

"mcpServers": { "keenable": { "type": "streamable-http", "url": "https://api.keenable.ai/mcp" } } }

Stdio (e.g. Claude Desktop's claude_desktop_config.json)

For clients or config paths that only accept a stdio command, run the wrapper with npx:

{

"mcpServers": { "keenable": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@keenable/mcp"] } } }

That is all you need for keyless use.

API key (optional)

Keenable is keyless by default. To lift the hourly rate limit, pass a key.

Remote:

{

"mcpServers": { "keenable": { "type": "streamable-http", "url": "https://api.keenable.ai/mcp", "headers": { "X-API-Key": "YOUR_KEY" } } } }

Stdio:

{

"mcpServers": { "keenable": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@keenable/mcp"], "env": { "KEENABLE_API_KEY": "YOUR_KEY" } } } }

How the wrapper works

@keenable/mcp is a small stdio bridge: it connects to the hosted server over Streamable HTTP and forwards every tool the server exposes. There is no search logic in this package; the index and tools live behind https://api.keenable.ai/mcp. Environment variables:

  • KEENABLE_API_KEY — optional API key, sent as X-API-Key.
  • KEENABLE_MCP_URL — override the endpoint (defaults to https://api.keenable.ai/mcp?keenable_title=npm).

Development

npm install

npm test

npm test runs the unit tests and a stdio smoke test of the discovery build (src/discovery.js): initialize must advertise the server metadata and tools/list must return both tools. CI runs it on Node 18, 20 and 22 and on the oldest MCP SDK the package accepts.

Releasing

The npm version lives only in package.json; the bridge reads it at runtime. server.json (the MCP Registry manifest) must repeat it as a literal in packages[].version, so bump both. npm run check:version compares them and runs automatically before npm publish. The top-level server.json version is the registry entry's own version and is bumped whenever server.json changes.
