Description from the maker (original English)

MCP server for timezone conversions and time queries with support for IANA timezones

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Other

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • The registry lists no key to fill in.

You need

  • PyPIPython’s uv installed (for the uvx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "time": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "lchinglen-time-mcp-server"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add time -- uvx lchinglen-time-mcp-server

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "time": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "lchinglen-time-mcp-server"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "time": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "lchinglen-time-mcp-server"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This one runs on your computer, and ChatGPT can only connect to servers on the internet. Pick another app.

Common questions

Is Time MCP Server safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.0.3) reached the registry 9 months ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Python (uv) on your computer.

What can I use instead?

Time MCP Server

A Model Context Protocol server that provides time and timezone conversion capabilities. This server enables LLMs to get current time information and perform timezone conversions using IANA timezone names, with automatic system timezone detection.

Available Tools
  • get_current_time - Get current time in a specific timezone or system timezone.
  • Required arguments:
  • timezone (string): IANA timezone name (e.g., 'America/New_York', 'Europe/London')
  • convert_time - Convert time between timezones.
  • Required arguments:
  • source_timezone (string): Source IANA timezone name
  • time (string): Time in 24-hour format (HH:MM)
  • target_timezone (string): Target IANA timezone name

Installation

Using uv (recommended)

When using uv no specific installation is needed. We will use uvx to directly run *mcp-server-time*.

uvx mcp-server-time
Using PIP

Alternatively you can install mcp-server-time via pip:

pip install mcp-server-time

After installation, you can run it as a script using:

python -m mcp_server_time

Configuration

Configure for Claude.app

Add to your Claude settings:

Using uvx

{

"mcpServers": { "time": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["mcp-server-time"] } } }

</details>

Using docker

{

"mcpServers": { "time": { "command": "docker", "args": ["run", "-i", "--rm", "-e", "LOCAL_TIMEZONE", "mcp/time"] } } }

</details>

Using pip installation

{

"mcpServers": { "time": { "command": "python", "args": ["-m", "mcp_server_time"] } } }

</details>
Configure for Zed

Add to your Zed settings.json:

Using uvx

"context_servers": [

"mcp-server-time": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["mcp-server-time"] } ],

</details>

Using pip installation

"context_servers": {

"mcp-server-time": { "command": "python", "args": ["-m", "mcp_server_time"] } },

</details>
Configure for VS Code

For quick installation, use one of the one-click install buttons below...

For manual installation, add the following JSON block to your User Settings (JSON) file in VS Code. You can do this by pressing Ctrl + Shift + P and typing Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON).

Optionally, you can add it to a file called .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace. This will allow you to share the configuration with others.

Note that the mcp key is needed when using the mcp.json file.

Using uvx

{

"mcp": { "servers": { "time": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["mcp-server-time"] } } } }

</details>

Using Docker

{

"mcp": { "servers": { "time": { "command": "docker", "args": ["run", "-i", "--rm", "mcp/time"] } } } }

</details>
Configure for Zencoder
  1. Go to the Zencoder menu (...)
  2. From the dropdown menu, select Agent Tools
  3. Click on the Add Custom MCP
  4. Add the name and server configuration from below, and make sure to hit the Install button

Using uvx

{

"command": "uvx", "args": ["mcp-server-time"] }

</details>
Customization - System Timezone

By default, the server automatically detects your system's timezone. You can override this by adding the argument --local-timezone to the args list in the configuration.

Example:

{

"command": "python", "args": ["-m", "mcp_server_time", "--local-timezone=America/New_York"] }

Example Interactions

  1. Get current time:
{

"name": "get_current_time", "arguments": { "timezone": "Europe/Warsaw" } }

Response:
{

"timezone": "Europe/Warsaw", "datetime": "2024-01-01T13:00:00+01:00", "is_dst": false }

  1. Convert time between timezones:
{

"name": "convert_time", "arguments": { "source_timezone": "America/New_York", "time": "16:30", "target_timezone": "Asia/Tokyo" } }

Response:
{

"source": { "timezone": "America/New_York", "datetime": "2024-01-01T12:30:00-05:00", "is_dst": false }, "target": { "timezone": "Asia/Tokyo", "datetime": "2024-01-01T12:30:00+09:00", "is_dst": false }, "time_difference": "+13.0h", }

Debugging

You can use the MCP inspector to debug the server. For uvx installations:

npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uvx mcp-server-time

Or if you've installed the package in a specific directory or are developing on it:

cd path/to/servers/src/time

npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uv run mcp-server-time

Examples of Questions for Claude

  1. "What time is it now?" (will use system timezone)
  2. "What time is it in Tokyo?"
  3. "When it's 4 PM in New York, what time is it in London?"
  4. "Convert 9:30 AM Tokyo time to New York time"

Build

Docker build:

cd src/time

docker build -t mcp/time .
