Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

ServiceNow ITSM MCP server for Model Context Protocol hosts

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Other
  • You need to fill in: SERVICENOW_INSTANCE, SERVICENOW_USERNAME, SERVICENOW_PASSWORD, SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • You fill in yourself: SERVICENOW_INSTANCE, SERVICENOW_USERNAME, SERVICENOW_PASSWORD, SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID, SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "servicenow": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@mindstone/mcp-server-servicenow"
      ],
      "env": {
        "SERVICENOW_INSTANCE": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_USERNAME": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_PASSWORD": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add servicenow --env SERVICENOW_INSTANCE=your-value --env SERVICENOW_USERNAME=your-value --env SERVICENOW_PASSWORD=your-value --env SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID=your-value --env SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET=your-value -- npx -y @mindstone/mcp-server-servicenow

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "servicenow": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@mindstone/mcp-server-servicenow"
      ],
      "env": {
        "SERVICENOW_INSTANCE": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_USERNAME": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_PASSWORD": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "servicenow": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@mindstone/mcp-server-servicenow"
      ],
      "env": {
        "SERVICENOW_INSTANCE": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_USERNAME": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_PASSWORD": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID": "your-value",
        "SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Values you fill in

  • SERVICENOW_INSTANCE required env
    ServiceNow instance name (e.g. acme for acme.service-now.com)
  • SERVICENOW_USERNAME required env
    ServiceNow username
  • SERVICENOW_PASSWORD secret required env
    ServiceNow password
  • SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID env
    OAuth 2.0 client ID (optional; alternative to username/password when the instance enforces MFA/SSO — requires an OAuth application registry entry with the client credentials grant enabled)
  • SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET secret env
    OAuth 2.0 client secret (optional; used with SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID instead of username/password)

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

Common questions

Is ServiceNow safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: SERVICENOW_INSTANCE, SERVICENOW_USERNAME, SERVICENOW_PASSWORD, SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.3.1) reached the registry 3 months ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Node.js on your computer.

What can I use instead?

Configuration

Environment variables
  • SERVICENOW_INSTANCE — ServiceNow instance name (e.g. acme for acme.service-now.com)
  • SERVICENOW_USERNAME — ServiceNow username
  • SERVICENOW_PASSWORD — ServiceNow password
  • SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID — optional OAuth 2.0 client ID (alternative to username/password; see below)
  • SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET — optional OAuth 2.0 client secret
  • MCP_HOST_BRIDGE_STATE — optional path to a host bridge state file used for credential management
  • MINDSTONE_REBEL_BRIDGE_STATE — backwards-compatible alias for MCP_HOST_BRIDGE_STATE
OAuth 2.0 (client credentials)

Instances that enforce MFA/SSO often disable basic auth. As an alternative, the connector supports the OAuth 2.0 client credentials grant:

  1. On the instance, enable the inbound client credentials grant (system property glide.oauth.inbound.client.credential.grant_type.enabled = true).
  2. Create an entry under System OAuth → Application Registry → New → Create an OAuth API endpoint for external clients and note the client ID and secret.
  3. Set SERVICENOW_INSTANCE, SERVICENOW_CLIENT_ID, and SERVICENOW_CLIENT_SECRET (leave username/password unset).

Tokens are fetched from the instance's oauth_token.do endpoint and cached until shortly before expiry. When both auth methods are configured, basic auth takes precedence.

Security

All external text returned by ServiceNow (record descriptions, work notes, user names, article bodies, and any custom fields) is wrapped in ... envelopes with close-tag breakout escaping before it reaches the model, so third-party content is treated as data, not instructions. Identifiers (sys_id, number), timestamps, and choice-list display values are left literal so they can be copied into follow-up tool calls.
