Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Trip planning and best time to leave, with live road data from 37 US states, traffic, weather.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs in the cloud
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Travel, maps & weather
  • You need to fill in: Authorization

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

This address needs a key in a request header, which the add-connector menu cannot set. Use Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code instead.

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http commutescout https://mcp.commutescout.com/mcp --header 'Authorization: your-value'

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

Values you fill in

  • Authorization secret HTTP header
Optional CommuteScout API key as 'Bearer cs_live_...', from Settings on commutescout.com/map. Enables saved places (home, work) and per-key limits.

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

What it can do

Tool names and descriptions exactly as the server reported them on Nov 7, 2026. The maker wrote them, not us; we show them as plain text.

  • check_route

Check current conditions along a major California highway corridor. The flagship trip-check tool: give it a start and end place and it returns everything active along that stretch right now - CHP incidents, lane closures physically in place, chain controls, and wildfires within ~

  • check_region

Full current-conditions report for a California region. Use this for area-scale questions ("how is the Bay Area?", "what's happening in SoCal?") instead of stitching together point queries. It sweeps every source over the whole region at once: CHP incidents (severity-sorted, wors

  • get_incidents

Live CHP traffic incidents statewide, optionally filtered. Data: the California Highway Patrol statewide computer-aided dispatch feed - collisions, traffic hazards, disabled vehicles, closures as CHP logs them. Refreshes about once a minute; incidents disappear when CHP closes th

  • get_lane_closures

Caltrans lane and road closures physically in place RIGHT NOW. Data: the Caltrans Lane Closure System (LCS). Only closures that crews have actually established (CHP code 1097) and not yet picked up are returned - scheduled-but-not-started closures are excluded, so this is "what i

  • get_chain_controls

Current chain-control requirements on California mountain highways. Data: Caltrans chain-control status for fixed checkpoints on mountain routes (I-80 Donner, US-50 Echo Summit, SR-88, SR-89, and others). Levels: R-1 = chains OR snow tires required; R-2 = chains required except 4

  • get_wildfires

Active California wildfires, flagged when close to a major highway. Data: the interagency WFIGS current-wildfire feed (NIFC) - name, size in acres, percent contained, discovery date. Points are each fire's ORIGIN, not its perimeter: a large fire can affect roads far from this poi

  • rank_routes

Which major corridors have the most going on right now. Answers broad questions like "what are the busiest routes", "where is traffic worst", or "which highways should I avoid today" across all 17 tracked corridors. by="activity" ranks on live events (full closures weigh most, th

  • get_cameras

Live Caltrans roadside camera snapshots near a point or on a route. Data: ~3,000 in-service Caltrans cameras statewide. Every returned image_url was verified live moments ago (offline cameras that serve a placeholder frame are filtered out), so images can be shown directly. Snaps

  • get_road_signs

What Caltrans changeable message signs are displaying right now. Data: statewide CMS sign text, blank and out-of-service signs already filtered - every record is a message a driver is physically seeing. Signs carry the road's operational truth ("CHAINS REQUIRED 10 MI AHEAD", "FUL

  • get_nearby_events

Live road events near a point anywhere CommuteScout covers, not just California: 37 states today (get_coverage lists them). Data: the same multi-state feeds the live map shows, normalized - state DOT incidents, roadwork and closures, chain and traction advisories, and nationwide

  • get_my_places

The user's saved places: Home, Work, favorites and recent destinations, synced from the CommuteScout site and apps. Available when this server is connected with the user's CommuteScout API key; otherwise `connected` is false and `message` says how to connect. The trip tools alrea

  • find_place

Look up a US address or place and get its coordinates. Use it to confirm which place the user means before planning, or when a trip tool answers needs_clarification. Returns up to `limit` matches with a ready-to-pass `coords` string for the *_coords arguments of the trip tools.

  • plan_trip

Everything about one drive between any two US places, in one call. Use this for "how's the drive to X", "how long to get to Y at 5", "anything on the way to Z". It returns: - the route (miles, main roads, alternatives) from the closure-aware planner the CommuteScout map uses: ful

  • best_time_to_go

When to leave (or visit) to beat traffic and weather, for any US trip. Answers "what's a good time to visit X", "when should I leave for the airport", "is 5 PM bad". It checks up to 16 departures across the window and returns, for each: drive minutes for that weekday and hour (To

  • get_weather

Hourly NWS forecast, active alerts and nearby road-weather stations for any US place, with driving hazards flagged by hour. Road-weather stations are state DOT sensors: pavement and air temperature, wind gusts and visibility, where a state publishes them.

  • get_traffic

Live traffic speed against free-flow speed on the road nearest each point, anywhere in the US (TomTom). Use it for "is the bridge backed up right now"; for a whole drive, plan_trip is better.

  • get_area_history

What usually happens around a place: incidents and closures that started within the radius, by local hour and weekday, the common incident types and how long they typically last. Use it for "is this intersection bad at rush hour" or "when is it quietest around the stadium". These

  • get_coverage

Which states and sources CommuteScout covers right now, with each feed's freshness. Check it when an answer is unexpectedly empty.

Common questions

Is Commutescout safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: Authorization

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (2.134.0) reached the registry 2 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

CommuteScout Live road intelligence for 37 US states.

A live map, trip planning with the best time to leave, mobile apps, and a public MCP server and REST API for AI assistants.

Website · Live map · MCP server · API docs · Data sources · Mobile apps

Overview

CommuteScout reads 53 official agency feeds across 37 states (state DOT and 511 closures and incidents, CHP dispatch, chain controls, cameras, message signs, wildfire perimeters, road weather, NWS alerts and toll prices) and turns them into one live picture of the road. Every answer carries per-source timestamps, and a failing feed is flagged as stale rather than hidden.

ProductWhat it does
[Live map](https://commutescout.com/map)Incidents, closures, chain controls, wildfires, about 18,000 traffic cameras, message signs and toll prices, updated continuously.
[Trip planning](https://commutescout.com/map)Closure-aware routes, drive time for any departure, the best time to leave, and an assistant that answers from the live feeds.
[Watch areas](https://commutescout.com/watch)Push and email alerts when something appears inside a drawn area or along a commute.
[Mobile apps](https://commutescout.com/app)Turn-by-turn navigation for iOS and Android that announces what is ahead in your direction of travel.
[MCP server](https://commutescout.com/mcp)18 tools for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and any MCP client. No key required.
[REST API](https://commutescout.com/developers)Every tool as a plain HTTP GET, with an OpenAPI document, one error envelope and published rate limits.
[Plugins](https://commutescout.com/plugins)Flare, an open protocol for adding third-party alerts to the map and the apps, with a marketplace.

Quick start

Connect an AI assistant

The hosted MCP server is public and works without a key:

https://mcp.commutescout.com/mcp

For example, in Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user commutescout https://mcp.commutescout.com/mcp

Setup for every other client is at [commutescout.com/mcp](https://commutescout.com/mcp#connect). Agents can read the same steps as plain text at commutescout.com/llms.txt.

Call the REST API
curl "https://mcp.commutescout.com/v1/tools/best_time_to_go?origin=Union%20Station%20Denver&destination=Red%20Rocks%20Amphitheatre&day=tomorrow"

Keys, limits, errors and the full parameter reference are at [commutescout.com/developers](https://commutescout.com/developers).
