Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Geocoding, static maps and privacy-safe area maps from OpenStreetMap data. Hard caps, no overage.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs in the cloud
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Other
  • You need to fill in: Authorization

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

This address needs a key in a request header, which the add-connector menu cannot set. Use Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code instead.

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http maps https://api.pinsharing.com/v1/mcp --header 'Authorization: your-value'

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

    "maps": {
      "url": "https://api.pinsharing.com/v1/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

        "Authorization": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

What it can do

Tool names and descriptions exactly as the server reported them on Nov 6, 2026. The maker wrote them, not us; we show them as plain text.

  • geocode

    Look up an address, place name or point of interest and get coordinates (lat, lon), a readable label and address parts, from OpenStreetMap data. Use it before static_map or privacy_area_map when you only have an address. Counts 1 address lookup against the account's monthly cap.

  • reverse_geocode

    Find the nearest address or place to a latitude/longitude, from OpenStreetMap data. Counts 1 address lookup against the account's monthly cap. Same storage terms and attribution as geocode.

  • static_map

    Render a map as an image (returned inline) with optional pins (markers) and a line (path, e.g. a route). Give center and zoom, or just markers and/or path and the view is fitted automatically. Also returns a reusable image URL for web pages (add your key). Counts 1 static image a

  • privacy_area_map

    Show roughly where a place is without revealing the exact point. The point is snapped to a grid and drawn as a shaded circle that always contains the true point, with no pin; every address in the same grid cell gets the identical image, so the exact location cannot be recovered o

  • map_setup

    Get ready-to-paste HTML/JavaScript for an interactive, zoomable PinSharing map in a web page (MapLibre GL JS vector map, Leaflet or OpenLayers raster map), or the raster tile URL template for any other library. Replace YOUR_KEY with a key restricted to the website. Needs no key a

Common questions

Is PinSharing Maps safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: Authorization

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.0.2) reached the registry 2 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

PinSharing MCP

PinSharing (https://pinsharing.com) is a map API built on OpenStreetMap data, with a free plan and flat paid plans. It provides static map images, including a privacy-area mode, geocoding, and tiles. This repository provides a small stdio-to-HTTP bridge for MCP clients that can only launch local servers.

MCP Registry: com.pinsharing/maps

Most clients: use the hosted server directly

The hosted MCP server is available at:

https://api.pinsharing.com/v1/mcp

See https://pinsharing.com/docs/mcp for setup. With Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http pinsharing https://api.pinsharing.com/v1/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY"

Clients that only run local servers (stdio)

Some clients, such as Claude Desktop with claude_desktop_config.json, can only launch local stdio MCP servers. For those, use this bridge.

Git and Node.js 18+ are required. An npm package (@pinsharing/mcp) is coming.

Configuration

VariableRequiredDefaultDescription
PINSHARING_API_KEYRecommendednonePinSharing API key (ps_...). Without it, discovery works and tool calls return the server's missing_key error.
PINSHARING_MCP_URLNohttps://api.pinsharing.com/v1/mcpHosted MCP server URL. Must be https: unless the host is localhost or 127.0.0.1.
PINSHARING_MCP_TIMEOUT_MSNo60000HTTP timeout in milliseconds.
PINSHARING_MCP_DEBUGNounsetSet to 1 to write debug logs to stderr.

How it works

The bridge reads JSON-RPC messages from stdin, one per line, and forwards each one to the hosted MCP server over HTTPS. Responses are written to stdout, one JSON object per line. Nothing is stored locally. The API key is only sent to api.pinsharing.com in the Authorization header, and never printed in logs or errors.

Plans and caps

PinSharing has hard monthly caps and no overage billing. A free plan is available without a card:

  • Free keys / dashboard: https://pinsharing.com/dashboard
