Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Power-market ratings, delivered cost, claims and gaps for siting a large electricity load.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Other
  • You need to fill in: PGIQ_KEY

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • You fill in yourself: PGIQ_KEY, PGIQ_API

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pgiq": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "pgiq-mcp"
      ],
      "env": {
        "PGIQ_KEY": "your-value",
        "PGIQ_API": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add pgiq --env PGIQ_KEY=your-value --env PGIQ_API=your-value -- npx -y pgiq-mcp

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pgiq": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "pgiq-mcp"
      ],
      "env": {
        "PGIQ_KEY": "your-value",
        "PGIQ_API": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "pgiq": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "pgiq-mcp"
      ],
      "env": {
        "PGIQ_KEY": "your-value",
        "PGIQ_API": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This one runs on your computer, and ChatGPT can only connect to servers on the internet. Pick another app.

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

Values you fill in

  • PGIQ_KEY secret env
    Optional PowerGridIQ API key (pk_live_...) for a higher quota.
  • PGIQ_API env
    Optional API base override.

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

Common questions

Is Pgiq MCP safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: PGIQ_KEY

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.3.0) reached the registry 34 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Node.js on your computer.

PowerGridIQ MCP server

Exposes the PGIQ Rating as tools any MCP-capable agent (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, custom agents) can call: "where should I site or schedule a large electricity load, and how is a given market rated." It wraps the read-only REST API at https://powergridiq.com/api/v1, covering 67 global power markets with a reasoned, cited decision, not just raw feeds.

Tools

  • pgiq_markets - list every rated market (id, tier, score, outlook). Start here.
  • pgiq_rating(market) - full five-pillar rating + evidence for one market (e.g. quebec).
  • pgiq_best(lens?, group?, min_tier?, limit?) - the ranked best-market decision. lens is default|cost|carbon|momentum.
  • pgiq_developments(market?) - recent cited grid developments.
  • pgiq_grid(market) - grid snapshot: carbon intensity, price, fuel mix, demand, firm headroom, peak stress. Merges live signals where available, else a clearly labelled modelled baseline.
  • pgiq_cheapest_window(market?) - cheapest hours to run a flexible load (modelled daily price shape, local time). Omit market for the cheapest grids ranked.

Install & run

cd pgiq-mcp

npm install node index.js # speaks MCP over stdio

Configure in Claude Desktop

Add to claude_desktop_config.json (Settings → Developer → Edit Config):

{

"mcpServers": { "powergridiq": { "command": "node", "args": ["/absolute/path/to/pgiq-mcp/index.js"], "env": { "PGIQ_KEY": "pk_live_optional_key_for_higher_limits" } } } }

Restart Claude Desktop, then ask things like "Use PowerGridIQ to find the best carbon-light market

for a 100 MW AI cluster in Europe" or "What's the PGIQ rating for Ireland and why?"

Authentication & limits

  • No key needed for the free tier: 100 requests/day per IP.
  • For a higher monthly quota, set PGIQ_KEY=pk_live_... (developer 25,000/mo, pro 500,000/mo). Request a key at hello@powergridiq.com.
  • Override the API base with PGIQ_API if needed.

Notes

  • The rating is a directional screen, not a connection guarantee; the interconnection queue is the real gate. Every market carries a confidence level, treat lower confidence with more caution.
  • Live grid signals, rating-change webhooks, and metered keys are available now; short-horizon forecasts are next.
  • A hosted remote MCP server (no local install) is planned; for now this runs locally via stdio.
