Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Renders MusicXML scores to PDF, PNG or SVG

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Docs, sheets & office work

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • The registry lists no key to fill in.

You need

  • PyPIPython’s uv installed (for the uvx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "render": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "render-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add render -- uvx render-mcp

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "render": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "render-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "render": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "render-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Common questions

Is MusicXML Renderer safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.2.2) reached the registry 20 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Python (uv) on your computer.

What can I use instead?

render-mcp

MCP server that renders MusicXML scores to PDF or PNG images.

What it does

Takes a MusicXML document and produces print-ready PDFs or screen-ready PNG images. Uses Verovio for layout and engraving — no external tools or GUI required.

Tools

ToolDescription
render_to_pdfRender the full score to a multi-page PDF file
render_to_imageRender a single page to PNG or SVG
list_capabilitiesReturn server metadata: backend version, supported formats, available renderers
health_checkCheck whether all runtime dependencies are available and the server is ready to render scores

Installation

Quick install: run ./install.sh for one-command setup, or see SETUP.md for a non-technical walkthrough. Ready-made client configs (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, Continue, Zed) are in examples/. If something isn't working, check TROUBLESHOOTING.md.

Manual setup:

cd render-mcp

uv sync

libcairo is required for PNG output:

# Ubuntu / Debian (usually pre-installed on desktop systems)

sudo apt install libcairo2

Running

uv run render-mcp

No environment variables required.

Usage examples

// Render full score to PDF

{ "tool": "render_to_pdf", "arguments": { "musicxml_path": "/path/to/score.mxl", "output_path": "/tmp/score.pdf" } }

// Render page 1 to PNG at 150 DPI { "tool": "render_to_image", "arguments": { "musicxml_path": "/path/to/score.mxl", "output_path": "/tmp/page1.png", "page": 1, "dpi": 150 } }

// Render only bars 17–24 (printed measure numbers, inclusive) to PDF { "tool": "render_to_pdf", "arguments": { "musicxml_path": "/path/to/score.mxl", "measures": [17, 24] } }

DPI range: 72–600. Default: 150. Page numbers are 1-indexed.

measures: [start, end] (optional, both tools) renders only those printed bars; a pickup bar is 0. The cut score keeps the key, time and clef in force at start. A reversed or out-of-range measures is an INVALID_PARAMETER error whose hint names the score's first and last bars.

Give the score as musicxml_path (.musicxml, .xml or .mxl) or inline as musicxml, not both. A path must lie inside SHEET_MUSIC_OUTPUT_ROOT (default: the working directory), one of the client's roots, or a folder listed in SHEET_MUSIC_INPUT_ROOTS; output_path must lie inside SHEET_MUSIC_OUTPUT_ROOT. describe_score returns a score's parts (IDs P1 …), key, time, tempo and length without rendering it.

Testing

# All tests including integration (Verovio runs in-process, no external tool needed)
