Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Castles, fortresses, palaces and ruins worldwide: search, nearby, fame ranking, statistics. CC0.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs in the cloud
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Search & AI memory

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 0 of 1 passed
  • Runs on the maker’s server: what you ask it goes through their server.
  • The registry lists no key to fill in.

You need

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Works in Claude on the web, desktop and mobile:

  1. Open Settings → Connectors
  2. Press Add custom connector
  3. Paste the address below and press Add
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker
SettingsConnectors1+ Add2https://…3

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http castles https://thecastlemap.com/mcp

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "castles": {
      "url": "https://thecastlemap.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "castles": {
      "type": "http",

    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

ChatGPT connects only to servers on the internet:

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web → Settings → Connectors (Apps)
  2. Press Create or Add (some plans need Developer mode under Advanced first)
  3. Paste the address below, give it a name and save
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker

Common questions

Is Castles safe?

It passed 0 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.0.3) reached the registry 2 months ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

Castlemap MCP server

A Model Context Protocol server for the Castlemap atlas: 7,786 castles, fortresses, palaces and ruins across 141 countries, with coordinates, founding dates, categories, fame ranking and Wikipedia summaries.

It is already running. Point a client at the hosted endpoint — there is no install, no signup and no API key:

https://thecastlemap.com/mcp

Streamable HTTP, stateless, POST-only (a GET returning 405 is correct). Protocol revisions 2025-06-18 and 2025-03-26 are accepted.

Client configuration

{

"mcpServers": { "castles": { "type": "http", "url": "https://thecastlemap.com/mcp" } } }

Registry entry: com.thecastlemap/castles.

Tools

ToolWhat it does
search_castlesFind castles by name, country or category
get_castleFull record for one castle
castles_nearNearest castles to a coordinate (haversine); geocode first
top_castlesBest-known castles, by fame rank
list_countriesThe 141 countries, with counts
get_statisticsLive aggregates — totals, per-country, per-century
random_castleOne castle at random

Data

Derived from Wikidata, with summaries from Wikipedia and images from Wikimedia Commons. The atlas is curated rather than exhaustive: it covers castles with a documented history, a real photo and exact coordinates, not every earthwork and ruin.

The factual records are released as CC0 and downloadable as GeoJSON and CSV from thecastlemap.com/data — also mirrored on GitHub, Hugging Face, Kaggle and Zenodo (concept DOI 10.5281/zenodo.21322359, which always resolves to the newest version).

Running it yourself

server.mjs has zero dependencies — no SDK, no node_modules. It needs Node 18+ and a castles.geojson to read (download one from /data):

CASTLES_GEOJSON=/path/to/castles.geojson PORT=8891 node server.mjs

It binds 127.0.0.1:8891 by default; HOST, PORT and CASTLES_GEOJSON override that. The file is re-read when its mtime changes (throttled to 60s), so updating the data needs no restart.

castlemap-mcp.service is the systemd unit used in production — loopback-bound, DynamicUser, ProtectSystem=strict, with nginx terminating TLS in front. Set ExecStart to your own node path and ReadOnlyPaths/CASTLES_GEOJSON to wherever the data lives.

Provenance

Built by flightmussy with AI assistance: the concept, direction and review are mine; much of the implementation was written with Claude. The underlying data is not generated — it comes from Wikidata, and every record is traceable to its Wikidata item.
