Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

One audio queue across Spotify, the browser, local files and whatever is already playing.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Design, images & audio

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • The registry lists no key to fill in.

You need

  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "upnext": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "upnext-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add upnext -- npx -y upnext-mcp

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "upnext": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "upnext-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "upnext": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "upnext-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This one runs on your computer, and ChatGPT can only connect to servers on the internet. Pick another app.

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

What it can do

Runs on your computer; the tool list appears in your AI app after you install it.

Common questions

Is Upnext safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.3.1) reached the registry 2 months ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Node.js on your computer.

What can I use instead?

upnext-mcp

An MCP server for your machine's audio. One queue across Spotify, the browser, local files, and whatever is already playing.

{

"mcpServers": { "upnext": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "upnext-mcp", "--library", "/Users/me/Music"] } } }

Drop that in Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, or anything else that speaks MCP.

What it lets an agent do

you: what am I listening to?

→ ❚❚ Acquired — Jensen Huang (Google Chrome)

you: let that finish, then play Bad Habit → adopted "Acquired — Jensen Huang" as q_0001 up next: q_0001 Acquired — Jensen Huang q_0002 Bad Habit — Steve Lacy

The first line reads a browser tab — no extension. The second puts it in the queue as a real entry, so the agent adds to what someone is doing rather than cutting across it.

Tools

tool
media_nowwhat's playing, in the queue *and* elsewhere on the machine
media_queuethe queue, with the id of each entry
media_enqueueadd a link, file path, Spotify URI, or a plain description
media_play · media_pause · media_nexttransport
media_seekjump to a position — says so plainly if the source can't
media_move · media_removereorder and drop, by id
media_searchsearch the sources that can search
media_adopt_currentput what's already playing into the queue
media_setupwhat's wired here, and what it can do

Every mutation is addressed by id, and every response includes the queue with ids in it. That's deliberate: a model working from positions races anything else touching the queue, and by the time its call lands, position 2 is a different song.

It tells the model the truth

Two places where this behaves differently from most tool servers, both for the same reason — a model that gets a silent no-op will confidently tell the user it worked.

`media_seek` on a source that can't seek returns a sentence, not an error:

the current source (spotify-desktop) cannot seek. Nothing changed.

`media_search` with nothing wired to search explains itself:

nothing found for "bad habit".

playing through: spotify-desktop, nowplaying, local

titles will NOT resolve: nothing wired here can search…

Titles need a searcher

A link says exactly what to play. A *description* has to be looked up, and not every backend can. The Spotify desktop app plays a URI you hand it but cannot search a catalogue — so on a plain Mac setup, media_enqueue with "bad habit" has nothing to resolve against.

Give it one of these:

// index a music folder

"args": ["-y", "upnext-mcp", "--library", "/Users/me/Music"]

// or a Spotify Web token, via the environment "env": { "SPOTIFY_TOKEN": "..." }

media_setup will tell you which you have.

Embedding it instead

If your product already has a queue, expose *that* one rather than starting a second that competes with it:

import { createServer } from 'upnext-mcp';

import { serveStdio } from '@modelcontextprotocol/server/stdio';

serveStdio(() => createServer(myExistingRuntime));

This package is a transport, and nothing more — ordering, capability negotiation, resolution and reconciliation all happen in upnext-core. It lives apart because a transport is an opinion, and nobody importing the runtime should inherit this one.
