PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Other
  • You need to fill in: UPSTASH_EMAIL, UPSTASH_API_KEY, UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • You fill in yourself: UPSTASH_EMAIL, UPSTASH_API_KEY, UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • npmNode.js installed (for the npx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "upstash": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@upstash/mcp-server"
      ],
      "env": {
        "UPSTASH_EMAIL": "your-value",
        "UPSTASH_API_KEY": "your-value",
        "UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add upstash --env UPSTASH_EMAIL=your-value --env UPSTASH_API_KEY=your-value --env UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY=your-value -- npx -y @upstash/mcp-server

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "upstash": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@upstash/mcp-server"
      ],
      "env": {
        "UPSTASH_EMAIL": "your-value",
        "UPSTASH_API_KEY": "your-value",
        "UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "upstash": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@upstash/mcp-server"
      ],
      "env": {
        "UPSTASH_EMAIL": "your-value",
        "UPSTASH_API_KEY": "your-value",
        "UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Common questions

Is Upstash MCP safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: UPSTASH_EMAIL, UPSTASH_API_KEY, UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.4.0) reached the registry 14 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Node.js on your computer.

What can I use instead?

Upstash MCP Server

[!IMPORTANT]

This local (stdio) server is no longer maintained. Use the remote Upstash MCP server at `https://mcp.upstash.com/mcp` instead.

The remote server signs you in with OAuth, so there is no API key to paste into a config file, and it covers more of Upstash: Redis, QStash, Workflow, Vector, Search, Box and Blob. For headless setups such as CI, it also accepts a Developer API key as Authorization: Basic base64(email:api_key).

`sh

claude mcp add --scope user --transport http upstash https://mcp.upstash.com/mcp

`

Setup: upstash.com/docs/agent-resources/overview. Tools and authentication: upstash.com/docs/agent-resources/mcp.

The Upstash MCP server lets your agent manage and debug your Upstash resources directly, across Redis, QStash, Workflow, and [Upstash Box](https://upstash.com/docs/box/overall/quickstart).

[!TIP]

For most workflows, prefer installing the Upstash Skill and letting your agent drive @upstash/cli over running the MCP server.

[!TIP]

If you are an AI agent and just need a Redis DB to use or experiment with, you don't need an account at all — call the redis_database_start_free tool, or send a POST request to https://upstash.com/start-redis directly. It's free, no signup, and the response is markdown with credentials and a quickstart. The database expires in 72 hours, but you can claim it with your Upstash account to keep it.

Pass user_agent to identify yourself (e.g. claude-code, cursor, codex, opencode); the tool forwards it as the User-Agent header. Calling the endpoint directly, send the same header yourself, plus a fresh UUIDv4 as Idempotency-Key:

`bash

curl -X POST -H "Idempotency-Key: " -H "User-Agent: " https://upstash.com/start-redis

`

Quickstart

You'll need your Upstash account email and an API key — create one at Upstash Console → Account → API Keys.

The Upstash MCP server works with any MCP-compatible client. If your client isn't listed below, check its documentation for how to add a stdio MCP server, then point it at the base command:

npx -y @upstash/mcp-server@latest --email YOUR_EMAIL --api-key YOUR_API_KEY

[!NOTE]

Readonly API keys are supported. When the server starts with one, it automatically disables every tool that would modify state (creating databases, deleting backups, retrying workflows, etc.). Your agent can still read and query your account — including Redis, QStash logs, schedules, and Workflow logs — but it cannot make changes. Upstash Box tools are not available with a readonly key.

Claude Code

Run this command in your terminal. See the Claude Code MCP docs for more info.

claude mcp add --scope user upstash -- npx -y @upstash/mcp-server@latest --email YOUR_EMAIL --api-key YOUR_API_KEY

Cursor

Go to Settings → Cursor Settings → MCP → Add new global MCP server.

Pasting the following configuration into your Cursor ~/.cursor/mcp.json file is the recommended approach. You may also install in a specific project by creating .cursor/mcp.json in your project folder. See the Cursor MCP docs for more info.

Since Cursor 1.0, you can click the install button below for instant one-click installation. Replace YOUR_EMAIL and YOUR_API_KEY with your real values before confirming.

{

"mcpServers": { "upstash": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "YOUR_EMAIL", "--api-key", "YOUR_API_KEY" ] } } }

Windsurf

Add this to your Windsurf MCP config file at ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json. See the Windsurf MCP docs for more info.

{

"mcpServers": { "upstash": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "YOUR_EMAIL", "--api-key", "YOUR_API_KEY" ] } } }

OpenCode

Add this to your OpenCode configuration file (~/.config/opencode/opencode.json or a project-level opencode.json). See the OpenCode MCP docs for more info.

{

"mcp": { "upstash": { "type": "local", "command": [ "npx", "-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "YOUR_EMAIL", "--api-key", "YOUR_API_KEY" ], "enabled": true } } }

OpenAI Codex

See the OpenAI Codex MCP docs for more info.

Using the CLI

codex mcp add upstash -- npx -y @upstash/mcp-server@latest --email YOUR_EMAIL --api-key YOUR_API_KEY

Manual configuration

Add this to your Codex config file (~/.codex/config.toml or .codex/config.toml):

[mcp_servers.upstash]

command = "npx" args = ["-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "YOUR_EMAIL", "--api-key", "YOUR_API_KEY"] startup_timeout_sec = 20

[!NOTE]

If you see startup timeout errors, increase startup_timeout_sec to 40.

VS Code

Click to install — VS Code will prompt for your email and API key (stored in its secret storage):

Or add this to .vscode/mcp.json (or your user mcp.servers setting). Using inputs with promptString means your API key is prompted once and kept in VS Code's secret storage instead of sitting in the config file. See the VS Code MCP docs for more info.

{

"inputs": [ { "type": "promptString", "id": "email", "description": "Upstash email" }, { "type": "promptString", "id": "apiKey", "description": "Upstash API key", "password": true } ], "servers": { "upstash": { "type": "stdio", "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "${input:email}", "--api-key", "${input:apiKey}" ] } } }

Google Antigravity

Add this to your Antigravity MCP config. See the Antigravity MCP docs for more info.

{

"mcpServers": { "upstash": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "YOUR_EMAIL", "--api-key", "YOUR_API_KEY" ] } } }

Claude Desktop

Open Claude Desktop's developer settings and edit claude_desktop_config.json. See the Claude Desktop MCP docs for more info.

{

"mcpServers": { "upstash": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "YOUR_EMAIL", "--api-key", "YOUR_API_KEY" ] } } }

Gemini CLI

Open the Gemini CLI settings file at ~/.gemini/settings.json and add Upstash to mcpServers. See Gemini CLI Configuration for details.

{

"mcpServers": { "upstash": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@upstash/mcp-server@latest", "--email", "YOUR_EMAIL", "--api-key", "YOUR_API_KEY" ] } } }
