Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Read token metadata, applications, audit logs, proxies and usage in the PCI vault.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 3 of 3 passed
  • Runs on the maker’s server: what you ask it goes through their server.
  • Can do 17 things (tools) basis_theory_list_tokens, basis_theory_search_tokens, basis_theory_get_token, basis_theory_list_applications …
  • The registry lists no key to fill in.

You need

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Works in Claude on the web, desktop and mobile:

  1. Open Settings → Connectors
  2. Press Add custom connector
  3. Paste the address below and press Add
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker
SettingsConnectors1+ Add2https://…3
https://basis-theory.usefulapi.io/mcp

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add --transport http basis-theory https://basis-theory.usefulapi.io/mcp

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "basis-theory": {
      "url": "https://basis-theory.usefulapi.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "basis-theory": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://basis-theory.usefulapi.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

ChatGPT connects only to servers on the internet:

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web → Settings → Connectors (Apps)
  2. Press Create or Add (some plans need Developer mode under Advanced first)
  3. Paste the address below, give it a name and save
  4. If it asks you to sign in, sign in with the maker

Menu names can differ slightly by plan and over time.

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

What it can do

Tool names and descriptions exactly as the server reported them on Nov 6, 2026. The maker wrote them, not us; we show them as plain text.

  • basis_theory_list_tokens

    List vault tokens as METADATA — id, type, container, fingerprint, metadata and timestamps. Does not return the underlying card number or PII. Basis Theory: GET /v2/tokens.

  • basis_theory_search_tokens

    Search tokens with Basis Theory's query syntax over metadata, e.g. metadata.customer_id:"cus_1". Returns metadata only. Read-only despite being a POST — the query goes in the body. Basis Theory: POST /v2/tokens/search.

  • basis_theory_get_token

    Fetch a single token by id. Returns metadata, container, fingerprint and timestamps. WARNING: if the configured API key carries a reveal permission, the response also contains the token's plaintext data — issue this server a read-only management key instead. Basis Theory: GET /to

  • basis_theory_list_applications

    List the applications (API-key holders) in the tenant, with their types and permissions. Basis Theory: GET /applications.

  • basis_theory_get_application

    Fetch a single application with its type and permission list. Basis Theory: GET /applications/{id}.

  • basis_theory_whoami

    Return the application the configured BT-API-KEY belongs to — the fastest way to check which permissions this server actually has. Basis Theory: GET /applications/key.

  • basis_theory_list_logs

    List audit-log entries — who did what to which entity and when. The tool for answering 'who touched this token?'. Basis Theory: GET /logs.

  • basis_theory_list_log_entity_types

    List the entity types the audit log records — the valid values for entity_type. Basis Theory: GET /logs/entity-types.

  • basis_theory_list_proxies

    List the proxies that forward requests to third parties, detokenizing in flight. Basis Theory: GET /proxies.

  • basis_theory_get_proxy

    Fetch a single proxy with its destination URL and transform configuration. Basis Theory: GET /proxies/{id}.

  • basis_theory_list_reactors

    List reactors — the serverless functions that run against detokenized data inside the vault. Basis Theory: GET /reactors.

  • basis_theory_get_reactor

    Fetch a single reactor with its configuration. Basis Theory: GET /reactors/{id}.

  • basis_theory_list_permissions

    List the permissions that can be granted to an application, optionally for one application type. Basis Theory: GET /permissions.

  • basis_theory_list_roles

    List the roles available for tenant members. Basis Theory: GET /roles.

  • basis_theory_get_tenant

    Fetch the current tenant — name, id and settings. Basis Theory: GET /tenants/self.

  • basis_theory_get_tenant_usage

    Fetch the tenant's usage report — token counts by type and container, and monthly API call volume. Basis Theory: GET /tenants/self/reports/usage.

  • basis_theory_list_tenant_members

    List the people with access to the tenant, and their roles. Basis Theory: GET /tenants/self/members.

Common questions

Is Basis Theory MCP by usefulapi safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.35.3) reached the registry yesterday.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

Connect

  • Claude (claude.ai, Desktop): open Customize → Connectors, click + Add → Add custom connector, and paste https://basis-theory.usefulapi.io/mcp.
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http basis-theory https://basis-theory.usefulapi.io/mcp, then run /mcp to log in.
  • VS Code: Add to VS Code.
  • Cursor and other clients: add the URL as a remote MCP server:
{

"mcpServers": { "basis-theory": { "url": "https://basis-theory.usefulapi.io/mcp" } } }

Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config: the server signs you in with OAuth, and the login page asks for your Basis Theory credentials.

Step-by-step setup, where to find your credentials, and FAQ: https://usefulapi.io/basis-theory/

On first connect you'll paste your Basis Theory credentials. They are validated, stored per-user, and scoped to you — no keys in config files.
