Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Read Buttondown subscribers, emails, analytics and automations; add subscribers; write email drafts.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs in the cloud
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Category: Marketing & social media

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 3 of 3 passed
  • Runs on the maker’s server: what you ask it goes through their server.
  • Can do 25 things (tools) buttondown_get_account, buttondown_list_newsletters, buttondown_get_newsletter, buttondown_list_subscribers …
  • The registry lists no key to fill in.

What it can do

Tool names and descriptions exactly as the server reported them on Nov 6, 2026. The maker wrote them, not us; we show them as plain text.

The Buttondown account this API key belongs to: username and e-mail address. GET /accounts/me.

  • buttondown_list_newsletters

  • buttondown_list_subscribers

List or search subscribers (newest first by default) with e-mail, type (regular, unactivated, unsubscribed, premium, ...), tags, notes, metadata, source, open/click rates and dates. Filter by e-mail text, type, tag, signup date or domain. GET /subscribers.

  • buttondown_add_subscriber

WRITE: add ONE subscriber by e-mail address. No subscriber type is set, so Buttondown applies the newsletter's normal sign-up rules (double opt-in: the subscriber is typically created as unactivated and Buttondown e-mails THAT ONE address a confirmation message; opt-in is never b

  • buttondown_update_subscriber

WRITE: change ONE subscriber's tags, private note or metadata. Tags are merged (add_tags / remove_tags change only those names; the others stay). A given note or metadata replaces the existing value (destructive for that field). The subscriber's type (unsubscribe, block, ...) and

  • buttondown_list_emails

  • buttondown_create_email_draft

WRITE: create a DRAFT email (status always "draft"). Nothing is sent or scheduled and no subscriber is e-mailed; to send it, the user must open the draft in Buttondown and send it there. This server has no tool that sends or schedules email. Body is Markdown or HTML. POST /emails

  • buttondown_update_email_draft

WRITE: edit the subject, body, description, slug or preview image of an email that is still a DRAFT (replaces those fields; the previous text is lost unless Buttondown's email history is used). Refuses any email that is not a draft, and never changes status or publish date, so no

Common questions

Is Buttondown MCP by usefulapi safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.22.3) reached the registry yesterday.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

In the same category: MCP YouTube Transcript, Google Analytics MCP, BibiGPT YouTube Video Summarizer

Use Buttondown from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client — subscribers, emails, analytics, tags, automations, surveys and events, plus subscribers and email drafts. Hosted, no local install: connect with your own Buttondown credentials.

Live endpoint: https://buttondown.usefulapi.io/mcp · Homepage: https://usefulapi.io/buttondown

Connect

  • Claude (claude.ai, Desktop): open Customize → Connectors, click + Add → Add custom connector, and paste https://buttondown.usefulapi.io/mcp.
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http buttondown https://buttondown.usefulapi.io/mcp, then run /mcp to log in.
  • VS Code: Add to VS Code.
  • Cursor and other clients: add the URL as a remote MCP server:
{

"mcpServers": { "buttondown": { "url": "https://buttondown.usefulapi.io/mcp" } } }

Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config: the server signs you in with OAuth, and the login page asks for your Buttondown credentials.
