What it can do

Tool names and descriptions exactly as the server reported them on Nov 6, 2026. The maker wrote them, not us; we show them as plain text.

  • pubmed_search

    Search PubMed with the same query syntax as the PubMed search box (fields, MeSH terms, boolean operators). Returns the total hit count and a list of PMIDs; use pubmed_summary or pubmed_fetch_abstracts on the PMIDs. E-utilities: esearch.fcgi?db=pubmed.

  • pubmed_summary

    Get short metadata for up to 100 PubMed articles by PMID: title, authors, journal, publication date, DOI and PubMed Central ID. Does not return abstracts (use pubmed_fetch_abstracts). E-utilities: esummary.fcgi?db=pubmed.

  • pubmed_fetch_abstracts

    Get the citation and abstract text for up to 20 PubMed articles by PMID, as plain text. Keep the PMID and journal when you cite an article. E-utilities: efetch.fcgi?db=pubmed&rettype=abstract.

  • pubmed_related

    List PubMed articles that are similar to one article (PubMed's 'similar articles' links), by PMID. Returns the linked PMIDs; use pubmed_summary for their details. E-utilities: elink.fcgi?dbfrom=pubmed&cmd=neighbor.

  • pubmed_database_info

    Show PubMed's current record count, last update time and the search field codes (for example TIAB or AU) that pubmed_search accepts. E-utilities: einfo.fcgi?db=pubmed.

Common questions

Is NCBI PubMed MCP by usefulapi safe?

It passed 3 of 3 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs in the maker’s cloud. Connect over the internet with nothing to install, but what you send passes through the maker’s servers.

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (1.1.4) reached the registry today.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It connects by URL, so apps that accept remote MCP servers work too, such as ChatGPT in developer mode.

What can I use instead?

NCBI PubMed MCP by usefulapi

Use your NCBI PubMed account from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client. Search PubMed, read article summaries and abstracts, find similar articles, and read the database's search fields, all read-only. Hosted, no local install: connect with your own credentials.

Live endpoint: https://pubmed-ncbi-e-utilities.usefulapi.io/mcp · Homepage: https://usefulapi.io

Connect

  • Claude (claude.ai, Desktop): open Customize → Connectors, click + Add → Add custom connector, and paste https://pubmed-ncbi-e-utilities.usefulapi.io/mcp.
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http pubmed-ncbi-e-utilities https://pubmed-ncbi-e-utilities.usefulapi.io/mcp, then run /mcp to log in.
  • VS Code: Add to VS Code.
  • Cursor and other clients: add the URL as a remote MCP server:
{

"mcpServers": { "pubmed-ncbi-e-utilities": { "url": "https://pubmed-ncbi-e-utilities.usefulapi.io/mcp" } } }

Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config: the server signs you in with OAuth, and the login page asks for your NCBI PubMed credentials.

Step-by-step setup, where to find your credentials, and FAQ: https://usefulapi.io/pubmed-ncbi-e-utilities/

On first connect you provide your NCBI API key, created in your NCBI account under Settings → API Key Management. The server validates it and stores it per user. No keys go in config files.
