Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Natural voice conversations for AI assistants - STT/TTS via MCP

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Other
  • You need to fill in: OPENAI_API_KEY

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • You fill in yourself: OPENAI_API_KEY, VOICEMODE_DEBUG, VOICEMODE_SKIP_TTS, VOICEMODE_PREFER_LOCAL, VOICEMODE_AUDIO_FORMAT, VOICEMODE_WHISPER_MODEL, VOICEMODE_DISABLE_SILENCE_DETECTION

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • PyPIPython’s uv installed (for the uvx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "voicemode": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "voice-mode"
      ],
      "env": {
        "OPENAI_API_KEY": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_DEBUG": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_SKIP_TTS": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_PREFER_LOCAL": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_AUDIO_FORMAT": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_WHISPER_MODEL": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_DISABLE_SILENCE_DETECTION": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add voicemode --env OPENAI_API_KEY=your-value --env VOICEMODE_DEBUG=your-value --env VOICEMODE_SKIP_TTS=your-value --env VOICEMODE_PREFER_LOCAL=your-value --env VOICEMODE_AUDIO_FORMAT=your-value --env VOICEMODE_WHISPER_MODEL=your-value --env VOICEMODE_DISABLE_SILENCE_DETECTION=your-value -- uvx voice-mode

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "voicemode": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "voice-mode"
      ],
      "env": {
        "OPENAI_API_KEY": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_DEBUG": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_SKIP_TTS": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_PREFER_LOCAL": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_AUDIO_FORMAT": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_WHISPER_MODEL": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_DISABLE_SILENCE_DETECTION": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "voicemode": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "voice-mode"
      ],
      "env": {
        "OPENAI_API_KEY": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_DEBUG": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_SKIP_TTS": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_PREFER_LOCAL": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_AUDIO_FORMAT": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_WHISPER_MODEL": "your-value",
        "VOICEMODE_DISABLE_SILENCE_DETECTION": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This one runs on your computer, and ChatGPT can only connect to servers on the internet. Pick another app.

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

Common questions

Is Voicemode safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: OPENAI_API_KEY

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (9.0.2) reached the registry 8 days ago.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Python (uv) on your computer.

What can I use instead?

VoiceMode

Natural voice conversations with Claude Code (and other MCP capable agents)

VoiceMode enables natural voice conversations with Claude Code. Voice isn't about replacing typing - it's about being available when typing isn't.

Perfect for:

  • Walking to your next meeting
  • Cooking while debugging
  • Giving your eyes a break after hours of screen time
  • Holding a coffee (or a dog)
  • Any moment when your hands or eyes are busy

See It In Action

Quick Start

Requirements: Computer with microphone and speakers

Option 1: Claude Code Plugin (Recommended)

The fastest way for Claude Code users to get started:

# Add the VoiceMode marketplace

claude plugin marketplace add mbailey/voicemode

Install VoiceMode plugin

claude plugin install voicemode@voicemode

Install dependencies (CLI, Local Voice Services)

/voicemode:install

Start talking!

/voicemode:converse

Option 2: Python installer package

Installs dependencies and the VoiceMode Python package.

# Install UV package manager (if needed)

curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh

Run the installer (sets up dependencies and local voice services)

uvx voice-mode-install

Add to Claude Code

claude mcp add --scope user voicemode -- uvx --refresh --from voice-mode voicemode-mcp-launcher

Optional: Add OpenAI API key as fallback for local services

export OPENAI_API_KEY=your-openai-key

Start a conversation

claude converse

For manual setup, see the Getting Started Guide.

Features

  • Natural conversations - speak naturally, hear responses immediately
  • Works offline - optional local voice services (Whisper STT, Kokoro TTS)
  • Low latency - fast enough to feel like a real conversation
  • Smart silence detection - stops recording when you stop speaking
  • Privacy options - run entirely locally or use cloud services

Compatibility

Platforms: Linux, macOS, Windows (native or WSL), NixOS Python: 3.10-3.14

Configuration

VoiceMode works out of the box. For customization:

# Set OpenAI API key (if using cloud services)

export OPENAI_API_KEY="your-key"

Or configure via file

voicemode config edit

See the Configuration Guide for all options.

Permissions Setup (Optional)

To use VoiceMode without permission prompts, add to ~/.claude/settings.json:

{

"permissions": { "allow": [ "mcpvoicemodeconverse", "mcpvoicemodeservice" ] } }

See the Permissions Guide for more options.

Local Voice Services

For privacy or offline use, install local speech services:

  • [Whisper.cpp](docs/guides/whisper-setup.md) - Local speech-to-text
  • [Kokoro](docs/guides/kokoro-setup.md) - Local text-to-speech with multiple voices

These provide the same API as OpenAI, so VoiceMode switches seamlessly between them.
