Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Safety-railed database access: Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, Redis. Read-only by default.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Databases & datasets

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • The registry lists no key to fill in.

You need

  • PyPIPython’s uv installed (for the uvx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "quarry": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "quarry-db",
        "mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add quarry -- uvx quarry-db mcp

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "quarry": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "quarry-db",
        "mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "quarry": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "quarry-db",
        "mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This one runs on your computer, and ChatGPT can only connect to servers on the internet. Pick another app.

Common questions

Is Quarry safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

The registry does not list a required key, though some servers ask you to sign in on first use.

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (2.0.1) reached the registry yesterday.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Python (uv) on your computer.

What can I use instead?

Quarry 2

A native database workbench: one reusable Rust kernel, CLI, browser GUI and MCP. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Redis and experimental Neptune; explicit query/write policies, SSH tunnels, saved queries, local Docker services and a SQL assistant.

Install

Version 2.0 is the native Rust stable release.

curl -fsSL https://yiminspace.github.io/quarry/install.sh | sh

qy --version qy gui

Or download a native archive and SHA256SUMS from GitHub Releases. The native executable needs neither Python nor a Rust toolchain. Supported: macOS/Linux arm64/x86_64; Linux glibc 2.28+. See install and upgrade.

Installer-managed copies can download new stable versions in the background. The next launch activates the verified update. Run qy update to update now.

Use

Run qy gui stop from another terminal to shut down the local standalone GUI. Use the same --config, --workspace, --host, and --port overrides as at launch. If you started with --port 0, use the port in the printed GUI URL.

qy --workspace /path/to/workspace connections

qy --workspace /path/to/workspace exec shop --env dev --sql 'SELECT 1' qy --workspace /path/to/workspace mcp

Workspaces contain connections.toml and reusable SQL query files. Actual credentials remain local. GUI queries stay read-only; CLI writes require --write and production confirmation. MCP writes require both server and request authorization. SQLite opens existing files; it never invents a database when a connection path is wrong. Assistant proposals never execute themselves.

Ordinary queries use native database drivers. SSH needs system ssh; Local services need Docker, and PostgreSQL schema sync needs pg_dump/psql.

Rust and Python

Rust owns main and all 2.x distribution. quarry-core, quarry-runtime, quarry-local, quarry-assistant and quarry-service can be embedded directly in host applications. Architecture.

For a hosted workbench, the official Docker image serves the GUI, authentication, read-only API and execution from one configuration file. Use a built-in administrator or configure an existing platform's IAM; YiminLab consumes the same image. ylab automatically connects and saves personal records to computer SQLite. YLab's embedded Quarry updates with YLab. Standalone qy also runs locally with its own workspaces. See the hosting guide for deployment, access grants and offline behavior. The Rust SDK remains available for advanced embedding.

Python 1.11.0 is preserved at its tag and the protected archive/python-1.x branch. Python import APIs do not ship in 2.x. The Python source retained in this checkout is a development/test baseline, not a runtime dependency or published Python implementation. Existing configuration, saved queries and histories are read by Rust. See upgrade instructions before changing installer ownership.

Build and verify

For frontend development, start the Rust workbench and Vite in separate terminals.

qy gui --no-browser
cd web

npm ci npm run dev

Open the Vite URL ending in /quarry/. Vite reloads frontend changes and forwards /api to the local Rust workbench on port 8765. If qy gui uses a different port, start Vite with QUARRY_DEV_API_PORT= npm run dev.

For a native build and the existing test workflow:

cd web && npm ci && npm run build && cd ..

cargo build --release --locked -p quarry-cli cargo test --workspace --all-targets --locked
