Download a file from a public URL, compress it on micompress.com and return a download link to the smaller file (valid 24 hours) with the size before and after. Works for images (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC, RAW…), PDF, video, audio, Office documents, EPUB and archives. Accepts dir
get_compression_result
Get the result of a compression started by compress_file_from_url, by the job_id it returned (kept for 2 hours). Use it when that call reported the job as still processing; returns the download link once it is done.
list_supported_formats
List the file extensions MiCompress can compress, grouped by category, with the size limit for this connection.

An MCP server that lets AI agents compress images, PDFs, video, audio, documents & archives.

Powered by micompress.com.

Ask your assistant *"compress the screenshots in ./assets"* and it will — no manual upload, no separate tool. Works with any Model Context Protocol client: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and others.

Hosted server (no install)

MiCompress also runs as a remote MCP server at `https://micompress.com/mcp` (Streamable HTTP, no sign-in). It compresses files by URL and returns a download link, so it suits Claude.ai, ChatGPT and other clients that cannot run local commands. Docs: micompress.com/mcp-server.

API key (optional)

Without a key the server works anonymously, within per-type size limits. For bigger files, sign in (free) at https://micompress.com/account, copy your personal key (mc_…) and pass it as the MICOMPRESS_API_KEY environment variable. The key stays in the server's environment — it is never sent to the model.

With a key, files up to 100 MB are accepted. A free account includes 50 compressions/month through the API; Plus ($9.99/mo) includes 1,000/month and Pro ($19.99/mo) 5,000/month, shared with website usage. When the allowance runs out the tool returns API_QUOTA_REACHED (free) or USAGE_LIMIT_REACHED (paid) — see https://micompress.com/plans.

Tools

`compress_file`

Compresses a file and writes the smaller version to disk.

Input	Description
`path` (required)	File to compress
`output_path`	Where to write it. Defaults to the input path with a `-min` suffix. Pass the input path to overwrite in place.
`preset`	`lossless` · `recommended` (default) · `extreme`
`max_width`	Images only — resize down to this width in pixels

Returns the size before and after, plus the output path. The file bytes are never returned to the model — only the summary, so a large file can't flood the context window.

How it works

Files are uploaded over HTTPS to micompress.com and compressed with the same engine the website uses (mozjpeg, pngquant, gifski, Ghostscript, ffmpeg, …), then written back to disk. Anonymous use works within per-type size limits (images 20MB, video 50MB, …); set MICOMPRESS_API_KEY for files up to 100MB.

Point it at files you're comfortable sending to a third-party service. The agent passes a path; the file's contents leave your machine.
