Overview

Description from the maker (original English)

Dockerfile and Kubernetes lint for AI agents: Pod Security Standards, A–F grade, a fix per finding.

PopNx MCP’s three pillars

These three are never merged into one score: opinions, measurements and popularity are different things.

What you can do with it

We have not written a plain-language summary for this one yet. Below are the facts we read from the registry.

  • Connection: Runs on your computer
  • Transport: stdio
  • Category: Developer tools
  • You need to fill in: RAPIDAPI_KEY, API_MARKET_KEY

Install

Pick the AI app you use, then copy the settings.

Before you install

  • Basic checks: 1 of 1 passed
  • Runs on your computer with your user’s permissions (files, network, apps).
  • You fill in yourself: RAPIDAPI_KEY, API_MARKET_KEY, HFL_MARKETPLACE

Values marked secret are keys to your account. Never share them or paste them into a chat.

You need

  • PyPIPython’s uv installed (for the uvx command)

Which app do you use?

Pick your app above. We remember it, so next time the button says “Install in …”.

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and paste this into claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shipshape": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "bytestay-shipshape-mcp"
      ],
      "env": {
        "RAPIDAPI_KEY": "your-value",
        "API_MARKET_KEY": "your-value",
        "HFL_MARKETPLACE": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Run this in your terminal

claude mcp add shipshape --env RAPIDAPI_KEY=your-value --env API_MARKET_KEY=your-value --env HFL_MARKETPLACE=your-value -- uvx bytestay-shipshape-mcp

Fill in the empty values before running it.

Open in Cursor

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shipshape": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "bytestay-shipshape-mcp"
      ],
      "env": {
        "RAPIDAPI_KEY": "your-value",
        "API_MARKET_KEY": "your-value",
        "HFL_MARKETPLACE": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

Open in VS Code

Or copy the settings yourself

Paste into .vscode/mcp.json in your project

{
  "servers": {
    "shipshape": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "bytestay-shipshape-mcp"
      ],
      "env": {
        "RAPIDAPI_KEY": "your-value",
        "API_MARKET_KEY": "your-value",
        "HFL_MARKETPLACE": "your-value"
      }
    }
  }
}

Your browser asks to open the app, then the app shows the settings and asks you to confirm. Key values are left empty for you to fill in.

This one runs on your computer, and ChatGPT can only connect to servers on the internet. Pick another app.

Your choice stays on this device in a cookie; no account needed.

Values you fill in

  • RAPIDAPI_KEY secret env
    Your RapidAPI key
  • API_MARKET_KEY secret env
    Your api.market key, used when RAPIDAPI_KEY is not set
  • HFL_MARKETPLACE env
    rapidapi or apimarket, when both keys are set

These settings are generated from the maker’s registry entry. If the README says otherwise, follow the README.

Common questions

Is Shipshape MCP safe?

It passed 1 of 1 applicable basic checks. We have not read the code. Before adding a key or token, see what access the server asks for and use a key with only the permissions you need.

What keys or codes does it need?

You need to fill in: RAPIDAPI_KEY, API_MARKET_KEY

Does it run on my computer or in the cloud?

It runs on your computer. Your AI app starts it when needed, and data does not pass through the maker’s servers (unless it calls an online service itself).

Is it still maintained?

The GitHub repo last changed –, and the latest version (0.2.4) reached the registry yesterday.

Which apps can use it?

Apps that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. You also need Python (uv) on your computer.

What can I use instead?

Shipshape MCP server

Let your coding agent lint a Dockerfile or Kubernetes manifest before handing it over: root in the final stage, unpinned base images, curl | sh, secrets in ENV/ARG, Pod Security Standards, resources and probes.

The server is open source (MIT). It calls the Shipshape API, which is paid, with a free plan.

  • You use your own key, from RapidAPI or api.market.
  • Every tool call is one request on your plan.
  • The free Basic plan has 15 requests a month, with a hard limit, so it never runs up a bill.

1. Get a key

marketplace
RapidAPIplans
api.marketstore

2. Add the server to your MCP client

The server runs locally over stdio with uv. Put your key in its environment.

JSON configuration (Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code and most clients):

{

"mcpServers": { "shipshape": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["--from", "bytestay-shipshape-mcp", "shipshape-mcp"], "env": { "RAPIDAPI_KEY": "your-rapidapi-key" } } } }

Claude Code:

claude mcp add shipshape --env RAPIDAPI_KEY=your-rapidapi-key -- uvx --from bytestay-shipshape-mcp shipshape-mcp
Environment
variablemeaning
RAPIDAPI_KEYyour RapidAPI key
API_MARKET_KEYyour api.market key, used when RAPIDAPI_KEY is not set
HFL_MARKETPLACErapidapi or apimarket, when both keys are set

Without a key the server still starts. The first tool call then explains where to get one.

3. Tools

toolwhat it does
`lint(content=… \path=…, type="auto", fail_on="high", ignore=[…])`lints one file and returns the A–F grade, score, passed and every finding with its line, fix and reference
  • With path, files named like Dockerfile, *.Dockerfile, Dockerfile.* or Containerfile are linted as Dockerfiles.
  • passed is false when a finding is at or above fail_on.

Every tool returns the API's JSON response.

  • When the marketplace reports it, quota_remaining is added: the requests left on your plan this month.
  • Errors are explained in plain words, with what to do next:
  • key refused, with the link to subscribe;
  • quota reached, with the plans;
  • input the API couldn't process, with the API's reason.

Privacy

  • Local files are read only when a tool is given their path. They are sent to the API for that one request.
  • The API processes inputs in memory and doesn't store them. See the privacy policy.
  • Your key is only sent to the marketplace you chose.

Limits

  • Files up to 512 KiB.
  • Helm templates must be rendered first (helm template).
  • NetworkPolicies, PodDisruptionBudgets and RBAC are not checked.
  • The server needs Python 3.10+ (uv installs it for you).

Development

uv venv && uv pip install -e ".[dev]"

.venv/bin/pytest # unit tests, no network; 100% coverage required .venv/bin/ruff check src tests scripts

scripts/e2e_stdio.py shipshape runs the server over stdio, as a client would, and calls its tools against the real API. It needs RAPIDAPI_KEY or API_MARKET_KEY.

Licence

MIT. Shipshape itself is a paid API with a free plan, run by ByteStay.
